Fairest Lord Jesus – Part 2

December 20, 2015 | Pastor Mark DuPré | From the series: Fairest Lord Jesus

This is part two of our look at the character identity of the Lord Jesus, this time based on the famous hymn Fairest Lord Jesus. Whatever we think of Him today, He is more, He is bigger, and He is better.

Listen to the Sermon

Sermon Notes

An old hymn, written in stages. Proably not sung by the Crusaders. Finally finished with an English fourth stanza written by a Lutheran pastor and theologian in 1873.

“Fair” means beautiful…What’s beautiful to you? Flowers, babies, music, art, a person…?

He is the most beautiful One of all. If we know HIm now, we will see Him in heaven and be able to see this beauty directly for ourselves. Now we can appreciate His beauty through prayer, meditation on who He is, receiving the scriptures, and real loving fellowship.

Ps. 90:17 and Ps. 27:4  Lord, help me see Your beauty in this life!

Ruler of all nature.

He created all things and sustains the universe. John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16-17

O thou of God and man the Son

Fully God, fully man. Jesus’ most common way of talking about Himself is found in Mark 10:45.

“The son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.” C.S. Lewis

Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor

What do you cherish?  A person, relationship, family, job, your alone time?

What do we do when we cherish something? We protect it. We love it. We give it priority. We care for it.

Do we cherish your relationship with Jesus? Do we treasure it? Do we protect it?

What do you honor? Honor originates in our hearts and refers to the value we place on something or someone. Jesus is the One we should honor the most. He is the best thing about us!

Thou my soul’s glory, joy and crown….

Think of all the things that get earthly glory—athletes, movie stars, politicians, celebrities….
How about Jesus? We should give Him praise, and glory. And our time, and our hearts.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,

robed in the blooming garb of spring:

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer

who makes the woeful heart to sing.

He makes the woeful heart to sing.

2 Cor. 1:3–comfort. He extends His Spirit to us to comfort us (that we may comfort others).

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,

and all the twinkling starry host:

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer

than all the angels heaven can boast.

The next time there is a beautiful sunny day….or a silent and still moonlit night…. think of Him who made it. And remember that is fairer!

Than all the angels heaven can boast.    Heb. 1:13-14

Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations!

He is the most beautiful thing in the Universe. He is beautiful in the scope of His power. He is beautiful in the scope of His influence. He is beautiful in the scope of His identity.

Lord of the Nations!

Psalm 47:8 and I Corinthians 15:24

He will destroy all of His enemies, the last one being death. He is more than a wonderful human born in time. He is over time, outside of time. He is still conquering. His life and death was only the beginning. All authority has been given to Him. Every knee will bow before Him, and every tongue confess that He is the Lord. He will rule over what we call His Kingdom until every opposing force is conquered, the last one being death.

As Matthew Henry puts it, this will complete the salvation of all that believe in Him.

Our righteous response?

Glory and honor, praise, adoration,

now and forevermore be thine!
