Culture Shock is what our society is experiencing! We’ve pulled together six of the most controversial current issues and together we’re exploring what God Himself has to say about them. Today we’ll debunk some myths about God and sex and find out what He really thinks about a very personal and important area of life.
You’d have to have been living in a cave somewhere to not know that we’re living in the midst of an oversexualized society.
“Never in the history of the world has a culture shifted its values concerning sexuality as rapidly or as drastically as it has in America in the last 50 years.” Chip Ingram
Robin and I were watching television Wednesday night after her small group ladies had left, and a commercial came on. We watched an older
man, who seemed to be widowed, getting ready for a third date with someone. His adult son gave him the same instructions the dad had given him as a teen: be home by 11, drive carefully, that kind of thing. It seemed cute. The son reaches out to his dad and puts something in his shirt pocket, you’re thinking it’s some cash. And the dad pulls it out of his pocket and you see that it’s a condom. And everybody in the commercial is smiling, knowingly. Now I don’t know how you feel about that being on mainstream tv, but I can tell you this: when I was a kid and then a young adult, no one could have dreamed a commercial like that would ever be on tv. Our basic morals regarding sex have drastically changed.
Myths about God and sex
1. God is anti-sex
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
and they shall become one flesh.
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
2. Christian sex lives are boring and out of touch.
Meant to be only in the context of a married relationship. Fire in the fireplace, not on the rug.
Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice with the wife of your youth.
19 As a loving deer and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
And always be enraptured with her love.
I Cor. 7.2-5
2 Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3 Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does.And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
3. As long as people love each other sex is okay with God.
29 that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you
will do well.
The words “sexual immorality” are from a Greek word, porneia, referring to all sex outside of marriage. It includes homosexual and heterosexual acts, as well as beastiality and other forms of sexual perversion.
18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.
3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;
4. Only a “cosmic kill joy” totally out of touch with today’s culture and people’s needs would prohibit all sex outside of marriage.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Is our culture struggling with the results of immorality?
#1 There are 19 million new STD infections in the United States every single year. Approximately half of them happen
to young people in the 15 to 24-year-old age bracket.
#2 It costs the U.S. health care system approximately $17,000,000,000 every single year to treat sexually transmitted diseases.
#3 There were more than 1.4 million cases of chlamydia reported in the United States in 2011. An astounding 33 percent of those cases involved Americans that were younger than 20 years of age.
#4 It is estimated that about one out of every six Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 have genital herpes.
#5 24,000 American women become infertile each year due to undiagnosed STDs.
#6 In the United States today, approximately 47 percent of all high school students have had sex.
#7 Sadly, one out of every four teen girls in the U.S. has at least one sexually transmitted disease.
A friend of Robin and mine was affected by this in her first marriage. Her husband cheated on her, had some homosexual affairs, and they
divorced, but not before giving her a sexually transmitted disease that rendered her sterile.
5. Everyone needs to sow their wild oats and experiment sexually before they settle down to a long term relationship.
1 Cor. 6.16-20
16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says,”shall become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.7 Therefore do not be partakers with them.
6. It’s too late for me. Sexual sin is so powerful that nothing can loosen its grip on my life.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
