Living in Between

January 10, 2016 | Pastor Mark DuPré | From the series: Born Again Identity

We live in between what God has done and what He is going to do. Knowing both should affect us greatly in the here and now. Hear how free we are in Christ, and what a great inheritance awaits us.

Sermon Notes

Are you affected by what anyone has done in the past?
Are you affected by what people are doing to and for you today?
Are you affected today by what is going to happen in your future?

We live in between. And God wants us to know it and experience it–now! We need to be affected by our past, our present, and our future. We’re all between the beginning of our salvation and the culmination of it.

So where are we now? Who are we?

Galatians 4:7 We are no longer slaves because we are now His sons. This is not a gender term, but a relational one, and a legal one!

Gal. 3:26-4:7

A son’s relationship with His father is based on birth, and is permanent. (John 8:35)
Do you view yourself as a son or daughter of God, or as simply a servant, or follower?

John 10:28-29–no one can snatch us from His hand. Ephesians 1:4 says that we were chosen to be His children before the creation of the world!

We are brought into a place of intimate communion with Him in a way that no slave could enjoy. (John 15:15).

As friends, He has let us in on some incredible plans of His. Ephesians 1:9-10 is not a secret, but is beyond our understanding.

What’s the proof? Ephesians 1:11-14 The presence of His Holy Spirit, the down payment of everything to come–not just His promises to us, but what He has promised to do with the universe.

We’ve been redeemed from sin, but we haven’t been totally redeemed or saved yet! That’s coming–it’s guaranteed! Romans 8:18, Colossians 1:12 and I Peter 1:3-9.

How can that be? Because we get to share in Christ’s inheritance. He did the work–we get the benefit if we are in Christ. Jesus is going to rule over everything, and we get to share in that authority.

TableTalk: “Not only does Christ take what should be ours–namely, punishment for sin–but through imputation He gives to those who are in Him by faith alone the inheritance He receives for His perfect obedience (Rom. 3:21-26).”

What’s going to happen later? We just go to heaven and hang there?

No, I Cor. 15:24 says that Jesus is stomping on His enemies and is eventually going to hand over everything to His heavenly Father.

His earthly work was done on the cross. But He is still praying for us, and right now He is stomping on His enemies, and is using us to do a good share of that work! He won’t stop until He has total victory over everything, including death!

What does that have to do with us? Everything. We’re part of it! Ephesians 3:10. He uses us! And II Timothy 2:11-12! This knowledge should affect us now!.

Right! And then we all go to heaven and get our harps? No–Rev. 21. A new heaven and a new earth.

So what do we do?

Galatians 5:1

Realize the extent of your whole life–from being chosen by God from before the world began, to having the sacrifice for your sin made 2000 years ago, to being born in space and time just when God chose, to having been born again into a new relationship with God as a son or daughter, to being able to enjoy the benefits of sonship even now, to ultimately ruling and reigning with Him when this present world is completely recreated and everything is put together under His Lordship!

Are you looking forward–in both senses of the word–to where the true culmination of your life is going to be?

And finally… I Corinthians 2:9–a great promise!
