I Peter 2:1-12 lays out several identities we have in Christ–living stones, priests, kings–all of them works of grace and love. Hear what all those callings mean to us and how we can begin to act like who we really are.
1 Peter 2:1-12
The “therefore” means we have to look backward… to I Peter 1:22-25a. As we have walked with the Lord, we have gained sincere love of our Christian brothers and sisters. Express that love–it shows that we’re born again. See I John 3:14
Lay aside all these things that would get in the way of your relating in love to others (deceit, hypocrisy, envy, evil speaking). This will be our challenge for the rest of our days–to get to the point of real love and then to maintain it.
Pure milk here is not in contrast to meat. Emphasis is on “pure”–based in God’s word. We should have the same yearning for good spiritual food as an infant desires its mother’s milk.
1 Peter 2:4-5–living stones. Jesus used imagery from stonemasonry because He probably worked in it.
Jesus is the BIG living stone. But we are living stones, too. Together, with Him, we are being built into a spiritual house, like the Jerusalem temple.
We are being built into a building–one of many metaphors in the Scriptures. What makes a good, sturdy stone building? Strong foundation. (Satan loves to go after leadership….) Sturdy pillars–if you are one, stay strong. Stones should be close together–no gaps.
Then Peter describes who we are! A chosen generation. A generation is a group that is united and also set apart. Didn’t just get in on a good thing. We have been chosen–individually. And we have been chosen as a group. God chose you individually. Do you believe that?
A royal priesthood. We are kings and priests. One of the “perks” of being in Christ. As priests, we each have direct access to God. As priests, our first offering is…ourselves! We can also offer up sacrifices of praise and service to others.
The real “secret” of the successful Christian life: seek first the kingdom.
As kings, we are to reign in this life. We’re to reign over sin, over our fleshly lusts, over circumstances, and over all the power of the enemy. Romans 6:14
In the future, we will reign alongside Him. Here and now, we are to reign over sin in our lives, bringing our minds, wills and affections under His Lordship.
Exodus 19:4-6 — God has always sought a nation of priests. Now, in Jesus, He has one. And we’re in that kingdom! We are His own special people. “Peculiar people” means belong especially to Him.
We were not a people, now we are! We belong.
1 Peter 2:11-12 Therefore… in the light of all we know about who we are, let’s avoid fleshly lusts. We are going to be falsely accused, just like Jesus was. Let’s just not give anyone a real reason to criticize.
You belong. Whatever other group you are a part of, you belong to God. You are among His people. You may be a part of a family, or a class, or a company, or a group of some kind. But your highest, greatest identity is child of God!
