“Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, ” by Pastor Bruce Plummer

June 17, 2018 | Pastor Bruce Plummer | From the series: Fathers Day

Father’s Day is a day of mixed emotions! Everyone has some sort of “father issues” it seems, and good fathers are a rare breed. But it doesn’t have to remain that way. God has a clear job description for fathers and when you’ve never had a good one, He’s willing and able to be your Heavenly Father.

Father’s Day 2018

“Just wait til your father gets home”.

Ever hear those words? Or say them?

Even if you will never be a father, by reason of gender or opportunity, you do have a father. And because we’re talking about human fathers, your experience with a father can be all over the scale. From non existent, to adequate to awesome to abusive.

Women, moms in particular are awesome in their own right, as we talked about a month ago. And needed, necessary in a life. But fathers bring something else to bear on lives that women, as faithful as they are to their own calling, can’t bring.

It’s true. If doesn’t matter how great a mom you have. If you don’t have a father in your life you’ll be forever looking for one.

The word “father” appears 998 times in the Bible, 2 shy of a thousand. Do you think that the position of father is important? When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, how did He teach us to address God? It wasn’t “Dear God” it was “Our Father”. And so if we want to see what a father looks like, let’s turn to how God fathers us.

Luke 11.9-13

9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

1). Fathers first provide.

They give way more than money or food, but that plus shelter is a minimum! Think of what God provides us with. Life! Everything needed for life and godliness.

2). Fathers next protect.

Psalms 121.7-8

The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;

He shall preserve your soul.

The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in

From this time forth, and even forevermore.

3). Fathers also identify.

2 Samuel 7.8-9

8 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.

The question of who you are is primarily answered in your Heavenly Father’s voice. Your dad or you as a dad are the human equivalent of that. You help your kids discover who they are and you confirm it.

I have two daughters. Very often I tell them that they should be proud of who God made them to be, smart, beautiful and strong. And I mean it. My hope is that they remember my voice saying that all their lives.

Here are three men who have been fathered and are now fathers…

Happy Father’s Day!
