What To Do About Your Future

August 28, 2017 | Pastor Mark DuPré

We all have our perspectives about our pasts–good or bad. But few of us have God’s perspectives on our futures. Find out what He says about our futures, what we’re promised, and what God is asking of us!

What comes to mind when you think about “your future”? Technological advances, your family, retirement, uncertainty?

Most of us have a sense of how we look at our pasts. Anywhere from “those were the good ol’ days” to shaking your head because of all the stupid things you did to hopefully, being grateful to God for what He’s done for you!

But today I want to talk about our futures, and how to best face it.

A few Bible characters had some trouble with their futures:

  • Moses, with God speaking from the burning bush
  • Jeremiah, knowing that the nation wouldn’t hear his warnings
  • The disciples, worried when they saw that Jesus was going away

Maybe you used to be excited about your future, and then something happened that has changed your idea of what the future was supposed to be.

What do you think God’s future is for you? Here are some predictions!

You’re going to continue being made into Christ’s image! Romans 8:29. We wonder why we go through certain things, and we look at ourselves as the reason for it–wrong!

God is working in you, and on you, and around you, to look more and more like Jesus!

God is working in us to change us to please Him. Philippians 2:13

Also, there is an US component to that same work of God. When God looks at us, He sees us as individuals and as part of a group–His body! So our futures are wrapped up in the futures of His people! Ephesians 4:15-16

Has God started anything in you? He promises to complete what He’s started! Philippians 1:6

Be assured of these things, too:

God knows what we will need, and He promises to provide our needs. But He also has given us wisdom as to HOW He wants to provide all our needs! Matthew 6:31-33.

He knows we need “stuff.” What what else? II Peter 1:3  Strength? Wisdom? Patience? More faith? Grace? Life and godliness pretty much covers everything!

I also predict….

That God will be with you.

God’s “strange answer” to Moses when he was looking at himself, and saw he was just one small person coming against the leader of the most powerful empire in the world. Exodus 3:11-12. Also Isaiah 43:2, Psalm 23:4, Matthew 28:20, John 14:26.

There are a few things that can mess up our future.

One is holding your plans too tightly. There is a famous quote about making God laugh by telling Him your plans.

Before God, we can’t assume we can control every aspect of our futures. Prov. 27:1 and James 4:13-15. We need to have Deo Volente in our hearts. We are to hold our plans loosely.

Finally, there is a surefire heart attitude that will rob your future of what God has for it.

Unbelief. There were scoffers in the early days of the church. We can’t can’t be counted among them now! II Peter 3:3-4

“The great paralysis of our heart is unbelief.” – Oswald Chambers

If you’re not dead, you’re not done. And neither is God!

We can’t be marking time! That’s a trick of the devil to rob both us and God. If you’re alive, there’s more to your story. And it’s never too late to hand everything over to God. He’s in the business of redeeming!

What is stopping you from moving into the future God has for you? Is there an offense? Or an unresolved issue? Is there a fear?

All this was to share what I felt God tell me a few weeks ago: “Tell the people to give Me their futures.”

Will you do that today?
